About Us

The Surat Basin Rail Joint Venture is an Australian based consortium made up of three partners:

In July 2007, the Joint Venture was awarded an exclusive mandate by the Queensland Government to investigate the feasibility of developing a 214 kilometre open-access, multi-use rail link between Wandoan and Banana, 130 kilometres west of Gladstone.

The railway will increase Queensland’s long term coal export capacity and connect the Western Railway System (near Wandoan) to the Moura Railway System (near Banana), supporting the continued growth of Australia’s largest export industry. Surat Basin Rail will connect to the future coal industry-owned Wiggins Island Coal Export Terminal, generating real growth and job opportunities for the Queensland economy.

Coal chain cooperation is integral because the timing and execution of the Wiggins Island Coal Export Terminal port development, related infrastructure and mining projects are vital to the success of this new railway. The Surat Basin Rail Joint Venture has commenced the customer commitment process which will identify the capacity requirements of the railway and gain commitment from foundation customers.

Surat Basin Rail is a new and iconic connection that will significantly enhance the existing coal rail network in Queensland and unlock approximately 6.3 billion tonnes of coal reserves in the Surat Basin.
